NANCY A. HODGES, LBSWNancy Hodges

Nancy A. Hodges is from Columbus, Ohio and a graduate of Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio (1973).  She has a Bachelors of Science degree in Sociology and Business.  Graduate work was done at Xavier University in the criminal justice program (1974-1975).   She began working for the Ohio Department of Corrections, Probation and Parole, with adult male and female felony offenders from 1973 to1978.   She began her adoption work with birth parents and adoptive families in Ohio through the Ohio Health and Human Services.  She worked with the agency from1978 to 1986.  Her responsibilities included investigating child abuse and neglect, foster placement of children and permanency planning for children into adoptive homes.

Mrs. Hodges moved to South Carolina in 1986.  For eight years, she was the Executive Director of the Family Care Council, a not-for-profit child abuse prevention agency.  Since 1988, she also worked with private adoptions.  She completed birth parent medical and social histories, adoptive parents’ home studies, and taking consents from birth parents.

In January 1997, she joined the law practice of Fletcher D. Thompson and James Fletcher Thompson as a full time adoption counselor.  Her adoption work concentrates on counseling with birth mothers, writing background reports (medical and social histories) on birth parents, and the placement of children with approved adoptive families. On average, Mrs. Hodges helps to place twenty-five to forty-two children per year.

Mrs. Hodges has extensive experience in Inter-national adoptions, having been involved with the placement of many children from the United States to Canada.  She has also worked with birth parents from many countries who chose an adoption plan following the birth of a child in the United States.  She has worked extensively with translators in the regard.

Mrs. Hodges is a licensed social worker in the State of South Carolina (since 1989) and is a South Carolina Certified Adoption Investigator (since 1988).  To maintain the licenses, Mrs. Hodges must complete and verify twenty hours of training for the SC Social Work license and ten hours of training for the CAI license per year.

Since 1997, Mrs. Hodges had provided training for Certified Adoption Investigators, South Carolina Social Workers, the medical field and volunteers across South Carolina.  She averages five to six training sessions per year at different venues.

Mrs. Hodges community involvements include 1990 Graduate of Leadership Spartanburg, Chairperson of the Spartanburg County Infant Mortality Task Force, recipient of numerous awards from United Way of the Piedmont, a participant of Spartanburg County Medical Society Internship Program, and a member of the Spartanburg County Consensus Program.  She has been involved in numerous community boards, coalitions and task forces, primarily concerning children and families.


JANINE FLEMINGJanine Fleming
S.C. Certified Adoption Investigator

Janine W. Fleming is originally from Danville, Virginia, where she graduated from Averett College in 1973.  She later received a B.S. degree in Mental Health and Psychology from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1976.  She began her working career as a Counselor in Greensboro with her primary focus in the area of problem pregnancy counseling.  She moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1980 where she continued her counseling work. 

Ms. Fleming has worked in many areas of the adoption field.  She is a South Carolina Certified Adoption Investigator, able to prepare pre and post placement reports for prospective adopting parents.  She is licensed to take consents from birth parents and has completed the Lay guardian ad litem certification training through the South Carolina Bar.

In 2002, Ms. Fleming was recognized for her outstanding contributions to adoption in South Carolina by being honored as an “Angel in Adoption” by the United States Congressional Coalition on Adoption in Washington, D.C.

With over 20 years experience in the adoption field, Ms. Fleming uses this experience, her education and her sense of humanity to continue bringing families together through the miracle of adoption.


AMY IRICKAmy Irick
S.C. Certified Adoption Investigator

Amy Irick graduated from Frances Marion College in Florence, South Carolina in 1991 with a double major in Psychology and Sociology.  During her college career, she was an active volunteer at Pee Dee Coalition Against Child Abuse and Domestic Violence, a rape crisis/ domestic abuse center and shelter.  Her academic and volunteer work earned her special recognition in the field of social work.

Ms. Irick was employed for five years at Mcleod Regional Medical Center in Florence, South Carolina.  For three years, Ms. Irick worked as hospital social worker and discharge planner for pediatrics, labor and delivery, the newborn nursery, and the neonatal intensive care unit.

Ms. Irick is a South Carolina certified adoption investigator.  From 1997 to 2006, she worked for the much-respected Bethany Christian Services, a licensed South Carolina child placing agency.  With Bethany, she served as a pregnancy and birth parent counselor, as well as the co-director and director of the Florence, South Carolina office of Bethany Christian Services.

Ms. Irick has been employed with the Thompson Law Firm since 2007.
